Monroe County, the most southeastern county in Michigan and the only county on the western shore of Lake Erie, is the "gateway" to the state. The county is rich in historical heritage and is well situated between three major metropolitan centers of Detroit, Ann Arbor and Toledo. Also, Monroe County provides a pleasant mix of urban and rural surroundings, and has well-defined transportation system of roads, freeways, airports, rail lines and a port that makes it ideal for economic development. As of the 2000 census, there are 145,945 persons living in Monroe County, in a region of approximately five million.
